Pendeen Information.
| Pendeen is an
ideal base for visiting local places, it is a peaceful historic tin mining
village ideal for those who prefer the countryside yet within easy reach of
the main towns. Geevor Mine, Levant and Crowns Engine Houses at Botallack
are all within easy walking distance of our property. The village has it's own meadery restaurant close by in Trewellard, formerly a chapel where diners can tuck into hearty food in true King Arthur style! (Cutlery optional!) Other amenities include a convenience shop, post office, working pottery, mining museum and gift shop. Pendeen Church was built by local miners and has celebrated it's 150th Anniversary and lies at the bottom of Pendeen Carn, well worth a walk to the top for it's wonderful views across the countryside and down to the sea. |

Tin Mining was once the major economic activity in Cornwall and has shaped Cornwall's development as well as it's landscape. Gaunt remains of engine houses perched on the cliffs reminds us of the workings below far out beneath the Atlantic ocean. Geevor Mine, now a museum is one of the few places where the whole story can be told and the boundaries of the mine include many of the ancient medieval mine workings registered almost 500 years ago, examples of the tools once used can be seen in the Geevor Museum. Other attractions include Pendeen Lighthouse, dramatically positioned is a good place to look out for seals, buzzards and kestrels. The light in the lighthouse used to be lit by an oil Argand lamp which was replaced by an electric lamp in the 1920`s, the lighthouse was then automated in 1995. The view from the light and the top of the cliffs is breathtaking and spectacular with the summer offering calm and idyllic scenes with stunning bright red sunsets. |
